Pumpkin Puppet

This cute pumpkin puppet is made out of an old tennis ball! The project is not very hard to do, but an adult must help and do all the cutting. Children will enjoy painting the pumpkin and adding on all the facial features. The pumpkin can be made to “talk” by squeezing the sides of the pumpkin.

Things Needed:
  • An old tennis ball
  • Knife
  • Orange paint
  • Black Marker or black paint
  • Black construction paper and scissors (optional)
  • Green pipe cleaner
  • Nail

1. Cut a slit in the tennis ball for the mouth, about 2.5 inches wide. Use a sharp knife to do this.

2. Paint the tennis ball orange, and allow to dry.

3. Use markers or paint, to make the pumpkin's eyes and nose. Or, you can cut out black construction paper triangles and glue them on, as I did below. Use a black marker or paints to draw around the slit, making it look more like a mouth by making a smile, frown, scrowl, etc.

4. Use a green pipe cleaner to make the pumpkin stem. Begin by folding the pipe cleaner in half about one inch from the top (see photo).

5. Take the stem and bring it across and over perpendicular and begin to twist it into a leaf. Take a look at the photos below which demonstrates how to do this.

6. An adult can punch a hole in the top of the pumpkin using a nail, and then the stem can be pushed in this hole. Your pumpkin is done! You can make him “talk” by squeezing the sides of the tennis ball.
